In the Navada outback near the town of Rachel sits one of the world's most top secret military bases - Area 51. With the base streaching in all directins and positioned on the dry Groom Lake this base is strictly off-limits to all ordinary civilians. Those crazy enough to enter the restricted area risk getting arested or even shot. The United States government doesn't even admit this place exists because highly classified national-security projects have been developed there for almost half a century. And also, of course, because there have been sightings of extraodinary flying objects from the fringe of the resticted area. Aviation experts belive the crafts are secret spy planes undergoing testing. Some people belive the crafts are not of this world and others belive they were made with alien technology. The sightings have attracted people from all over the world to this desolate place.
Area 51 is actually 6 miles wide by 10 miles long connecting to the military's Navada Test Site. But people now think of Area 51 as the entire restricted area as you can see here.
Regular citizens were once allowed to take a peek at Area 51 from a place known as Freedom Ridge which was twelve miles away. For civilians this was as far as they could go but, in April '95 the government expanded the off limits sector. Tikaboo Peak is now the closest spot which is 40 km away. Before Freedom Ridge was off limits spectators with telescopes could see the buildings, satelite dishes, airplane hangars, control towers, and the two runways.
In 1954 the Pentagon admitted it was secretly developing new spy planes like the U-2 used to spy on Communist countries. Also, according to the New York Times, the base developed the SR-71 Blackbird, B2 Stealth bomber, and the F-117A Staelth Fighter. The base was home to the "Red Hat Squadron," a a group of aircraft which had left the Soviet Union when it still existed. The base is also thought to house the prototype Aurora Spyplane. It is thought to be a triangular shaped aircraft able to up to up to Mach 8 (8 times the speed of sound, or 4800 miles an hour-no need for frequent flier miles there, right?). Many people have heard sonic booms, or even senced its presence, that have tripped seismographs ove the Mojave Desert, around June 1991. The witnesses descibed the booms as tremendously loud, throbbing, deep, low frequency roar. They also described a strange vapor trail resembling dounuts on a rope. In recent years observers have claimed to have seen extraordinary aircraft flying at great speeds, stopping abruptly, and manuvering through the sky like no other aircraft nown to the public. Some groups believe that these crafts were created using extraterrestrial technology. These people also believe the crafts are stored at Area 51.
Robert Lazar appeared in Las Vegas in 1989. He claimed to work briefly for the government to reverse engineer an alien flying sauser. R. Lazar showed government pay documents to prove that he worked at the secret base. Lazar said that when he was hired he was only told that he would be working on "advanced propultion systems." When he reported in for work he found out that he actually would be reverse engineering an alien craft for the U.S. Military to reproduce in its new generation of planes. Lazar said he saw 9 flying sausers stored in hangers at Papoose Lake, part of Area 51. He also said he saw one of the crafts fly briefly, pioloted by Air Force personnel. He claimed he exaamined one sauser in detail, read Military briefing papers about alien technology, and studied government records of humans making contacts with extraterrestrials. After working for several monts at the secret base, Lazar was fired. According to Lazar, no one in Congress knew about the project. If these claims are true, then the location of Area 51 would be logical.
